Quick Answer

What most minor body damage needs

Most bumper scuffs, small dents and scratches can be repaired rather than replaced, unless the plastic is torn, the metal is stretched or the mounts are broken. Three things decide the job: how deep the damage goes, where it sits on the panel and what is hiding behind it, and we check all three before we quote. A slow bump in a car park can leave the cover looking almost untouched while a bracket behind it has snapped or a parking sensor has been pushed out of place, so we take the bumper off where needed. A shallow dent with unbroken paint can often be pushed out with paintless dent removal, keeping the original finish. Where paint is needed, we colour-match and blend it in our own spray booth, and back our panel and paint workmanship with a lifetime warranty while you own the car.

Bumper Damage

How we assess a damaged bumper

A modern bumper is made of several parts. The painted plastic cover is clipped and screwed to brackets, and behind it there is usually an energy absorber and a metal reinforcement bar.

Parking sensors, fog lights and, on some newer cars, radar units sit in or just behind the cover. A slow bump while reversing out of a parking bay can leave the cover looking almost untouched while a bracket behind it has snapped or a sensor has been pushed out of place.

Four Levels of Bumper Damage

Why a car park bump can need more than paint

Surface scuff

Paint scraped off, but the plastic is intact and the bumper sits flush. Usually a sand, fill and refinish job.

Cracks and tears

A split in the plastic, often at a corner or sensor hole. Short cracks away from mounting points can often be repaired; long tears or missing pieces usually mean a new cover.

Broken mounts and brackets

Uneven gaps to the guard or headlight, or a bumper that moves when pressed, usually means clips or brackets have let go and need replacing.

Damage you can't see

Where needed we take the cover off and check for a bent reinforcement bar, a crushed absorber, cracked light housings, sensor damage and warning messages on the dash.

Lights and bumpers also matter for roadworthiness. Transport Victoria's roadworthiness requirements (VSI 26) cover lamps and signals and body items such as bumper bars, but not cosmetic condition. A scuffed corner won't matter there; a cracked lens or a loose bumper can. Selling soon? See our roadworthy page.

Repair or Replace

What decides whether a part is repaired or replaced

There's no fixed rule. A repairer weighs these factors and picks the option that gives a sound, lasting result.

Where the damage sits

Damage in a flat area is easier to repair well than damage across a body line, an edge or a mounting point.

Condition of the material

Torn, heat-distorted or previously repaired plastic may not hold another repair, and stretched steel is harder to bring back to shape.

Labour against the part

Sometimes reshaping a panel takes longer than fitting and painting a new one. The answer changes from car to car.

Parts availability

When a replacement part is slow to source, repair can be the practical choice if the damage allows it.

Dents

What we look at when you bring in a dent

Two dents of the same size can be very different jobs. This is what a panel beater weighs up.

Size and depth

A shallow, rounded dent stretches the metal less than a deep, sharp one, so it is usually simpler to reshape.

Creases and edges

A crease, or a dent running into a body line or panel edge, has folded the metal and needs more shaping and refinishing.

Whether the paint has cracked

Cracked or flaking paint means the area needs refinishing after reshaping. Hairline cracks are easy to miss, so look in good light.

What else it affected

A door dent can change how the door shuts, and bracing behind a panel can limit access. We check alignment, gaps and access before quoting.

Paintless dent removal

If the paint is unbroken and the dent is shallow and away from edges and creases, we can often push it back out from behind with paintless dent removal, so the original paint stays and no refinishing is needed. Sharp creases, cracked paint and dents on braced areas still need conventional panel and paint work.

Scratches

Reading a scratch: how deep has it gone?

Paint is built in layers: clear lacquer, then colour, then primer, then the panel. The deeper a scratch goes, the more layers need rebuilding.

Clear coat only

Fine marks with no change of colour in the groove. Often these can be machine polished.

Into the colour

The groove looks lighter or duller than the paint around it. It needs paint, as polishing won't hide it.

Primer or bare metal

Grey, white or bare metal showing. The panel needs preparation and refinishing, and exposed steel should be sealed soon.

A rough home check is to drag a fingernail gently across the mark. A nail that glides over suggests a shallow, lacquer-only scratch; a nail that snags suggests the colour or primer has been cut. Send us a photo if you're unsure.

Seal bonnet stone chips and scratches that expose steel quickly. Once moisture reaches bare steel, rust can start and spread under the paint around it, turning a small fix into a bigger one.

Paint Matching

Colour matching and blending in our own booth

The paint code gives the formula, but two cars with the same code rarely look identical after a few Melbourne summers. Batches differ slightly and UV shifts colour over time. Metallics and pearls are harder again, as their tone changes with viewing angle.

To hide the join, new colour is usually blended into the neighbouring panels so the eye sees a gradual change instead of a hard edge, then clear coat goes over the whole area. All our painting is done in our own spray booth on site.

Paying for It

Should you claim or pay privately?

If another driver caused the damage, you can usually claim against their insurer and choose your repairer. We then handle the claim with the insurer, plus towing and a replacement car if needed. See how car accident repairs and not-at-fault claims work.

If the damage is your own, or nobody else can be identified, a minor scuff or dent is a judgement call. Compare the repair quote with your excess and with what a claim might do to your premium or rating. When the gap is small, paying privately can work out cheaper. Read about how excess works and whose insurance to call, or book an assessment for a private repair.

Before You Book

What to send us

Good photos show us whether the job looks like a simple refinish or needs the bumper off. Send photos of the damage, or book a time if you'd rather bring the car in.

A wide shot

Stand back a few metres so the whole corner or side is in frame, showing panel gaps.

Two close-ups

One straight on and one along the panel from a low angle, where reflections reveal a dent's shape.

Underneath and around

For a cracked or loose bumper, add its lower edge, the wheel arch and nearby lights or sensors.

Dash and details

Note any new warning lights or sensor messages, your rego and whether another driver was involved.

Common Questions

Bumper, dent and scratch questions

Can a cracked bumper be repaired?

Often, if the crack is short and away from the mounting tabs. Long tears, missing pieces or broken mounts usually make a new cover the better repair. We decide after checking what's behind it.

Do you fix car park dents and door dings?

Yes. Minor dents from everyday knocks and car park bumps are part of our panel work. The method depends on the dent's size, depth, position and paint condition.

Will the new paint match the rest of my car?

We colour-match to your car and blend into the surrounding panels so there's no visible edge, painting in our own spray booth in Dandenong.

How much does a bumper or dent repair cost?

It depends on repair versus replacement, how much painting and blending is needed, the colour and parts availability. We assess first and quote from what we find.

Should I claim a minor scrape on my insurance?

If you weren't at fault, claim against the other driver's insurer and we can handle it. If it's your own damage, weigh the repair cost against your excess and premium first.

Is the repair covered by a warranty?

Yes. Our panel and paint workmanship has a lifetime warranty while you own the car. It excludes new damage, normal wear and parts under the manufacturer's warranty.
