At the Scene

What to do before the tow arrives

Safety comes first. If anyone is hurt, or the road is blocked or dangerous, call 000. Once everyone is safe, these steps make the tow, the repair and the claim easier.

Get to a safe spot

Turn on your hazard lights and stand well away from traffic. Only move the car if it's safe and legal to do so.

Swap details

Write down the other driver's name, address, phone, rego and insurer. In Victoria you must exchange details after a crash.

Take photos

Photograph both cars, the number plates, the road and anything that shows how the crash happened.

Call us

Your Rights

Your towing rights in Victoria

The Department of Transport and Planning's towing and your rights fact sheet sets out what happens when a car is towed from an accident. In short:

After the Tow

One workshop from tow to collection

When the tow ends at our workshop, the car doesn't need to move again. We assess the damage, talk to the insurer, and repair it in our own panel shop and spray booth. Mechanical damage from the same crash, such as steering or suspension, is repaired on the same site.

If the other driver was at fault, we handle the claim with their insurer and you get a replacement car once the paperwork is finalised. If it was your fault or nobody else was involved, we repair cars for customers of any insurance company and help with the paperwork for your own policy. Quotes are free.

Common Questions

Accident towing questions, answered

Can you arrange a tow at night or on the weekend?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24/7 and accident towing is arranged 24/7. Call 03 8774 5785 and tell us where the car is.

Who pays for the tow?

Victoria's Department of Transport and Planning says the owner or driver arranges and pays for an accident tow, and in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula the fees are set by regulation. If the other driver was at fault, towing is part of what we deal with their insurer about, but how it's handled depends on the case, so ask us when you call.

Where will my car be taken?

To our workshop at 5 Quinn Street, Dandenong, where it's assessed and repaired. Your car stays in one place from the tow to the finished repair.

Why did a tow truck turn up that I didn't call?

In metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and Geelong, accident tow trucks are allocated by an accident allocation centre, and the driver gets a job number. Only trucks with TOW or HTT number plates may tow an accident-damaged car. You can still choose where your car goes: tell the driver you want it taken to 5 Quinn Street, Dandenong.

Do I have to decide on a repairer at the scene?

No. The Department of Transport and Planning says you don't need to decide where your car will be repaired at the time of the tow, and touting for repair work at an accident scene is prohibited. You can call anyone you choose for advice first.

Can I get a replacement car after the tow?

If the accident wasn't your fault, yes: once the claim paperwork is finalised and your car is with us, you get a replacement car straight away. See our replacement car page.
