How Melbourne Heat Affects Your Tyres
A 40-degree day in Melbourne doesn't just heat the air — it heats the road surface well beyond that, and your tyres are the only part of the car in constant contact with it. Here's what actually changes in the heat, and what's worth checking before it catches you out.
Why heat is harder on tyres than cold
Rubber compounds are engineered to perform across a temperature range, but sustained extreme heat accelerates wear and softens the rubber more than it's designed for. Combine that with hot bitumen, higher rolling resistance from underinflation, and long summer drives, and a tyre that would happily last another 12 months in cooler weather can wear noticeably faster.
Pressure changes you might not notice
Air expands as it heats up, so tyre pressure naturally rises through a hot day — often more than people expect. If you set your pressures first thing in the morning when it's cool, don't be surprised to see the reading climb by early afternoon. This is normal, but it's exactly why checking pressure when tyres are cold (not after a drive) gives the most accurate reading.
Tread depth matters more in summer
Worn tread doesn't just affect wet-weather grip — on hot, sticky bitumen it also reduces the tyre's ability to dissipate heat properly, which increases the risk of a blowout on a long, hot highway drive. If you're already close to the legal minimum of 1.5mm, summer is not the season to push it to the next service.
Signs of heat-related tyre damage
Look for cracking in the sidewall (sometimes called "weather checking"), bulges or blisters, and any unusual vibration at highway speed. Bulges in particular are a sign of internal structural damage and mean the tyre should be replaced, not just monitored — they can fail suddenly and without further warning.
Simple checks you can do at home
Check pressure monthly (and before any long trip) using a reliable gauge, while the tyres are cold. Run a hand and eye over the tread and sidewalls for anything unusual, and rotate tyres roughly every 10,000km to even out wear. If in doubt, a quick check at the workshop takes minutes and costs nothing.
If your tyres are due for a proper check — or it's time for a rotation or replacement — our tyres & wheels service covers it all. Book a service, or call us on 03 8774 5785.
