5 Signs Your Car's Aircon Needs Regassing Before Summer

Melbourne summers push a car's air conditioning system harder than almost anything else it does all year — and if the system was already running low on refrigerant, that's when it shows. Here's what to look out for, and why "just add gas" isn't always the fix.

1. Airflow that's cool, but not cold

If your AC is blowing air that's noticeably cooler than outside but nowhere near as cold as it used to be, that's usually the first sign of refrigerant loss. Small leaks develop gradually at hose fittings and seals — by the time you notice weaker cooling, the system's often been running low for a while.

2. It takes longer to cool the cabin down

A healthy system should bring the cabin to a comfortable temperature within a minute or two of setting off. If you're waiting several minutes, or turning the fan to max just to get by, the compressor is likely struggling with reduced refrigerant pressure.

3. Unusual noise when the AC is running

A rattling, squealing or clicking sound that only happens with the AC switched on usually points to the compressor or its clutch — not something to ignore, since a failing compressor can get more expensive the longer it runs low on lubricant (which travels through the system with the refrigerant).

4. A musty smell through the vents

This is usually a blocked or dirty cabin filter rather than a refrigerant issue — but it's worth checking at the same time as an AC service, since airflow problems often get blamed on "low gas" when the real cause is a filter that hasn't been changed in a while.

5. It worked fine last summer, but not this one

AC systems lose a small amount of refrigerant naturally over time, even with no obvious fault. If it's been a couple of years since your last regas, a gradual drop-off year to year is completely normal — and a good reason to get it checked before the weather really turns.

Why regassing alone doesn't always fix it

Topping up refrigerant without finding out why it's low just means you'll be back in the same spot next year — or sooner, if there's an active leak. A proper AC service checks system pressure, tests the compressor, and looks for the source of any loss before recharging to the manufacturer's specified quantity. That's the difference between a fix that lasts and one that's just delaying the same problem.
